BREAKING: Denver Metro Areas Experience Severe Wind Storms
On April 2 at the Future Business Leaders of America Leadership Conference (FBLA), District 11 members pose for a photo at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center. During the convention about 27 Jaguars competed in over 17 categories at the state level. I joined FBLA because I wanted to expand my business knowledge and learn more the careers in the business world, Preston Canter 27 said. Im looking forward to improving my presentation skills in FBLA competitive events.

Black & Gold Yearbook Editor-in-Chief Chloe Farson ‘25 works on a winter trends and events page for the yearbook during period four in room 4113 March 25. The deadline for the final version of the yearbook is this Friday, March 29. “Although I’m quite nervous and stressed about [the deadline], I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product more than anything,” Farson said. “I’ve found our book to be extremely unique from ones in past years, and it’s been so beautiful to work on. It’s wonderful to see it truly begin to come together, even though we don’t necessarily have all the time in the world to make it perfect.”

Final Four Take
The girls varsity soccer team walk back to their bench during halftime April 1. The Jags played against the Castle View Sabercats at the Douglas County Stadium and scored 3-0 W. “It felt really good [to beat Castle View]. I feel like that was a big win for us because knowing that we came together to beat a pretty good team has definitely given us some leverage for this season,” attacking midfielder Grace Rossner ‘24 said.

On Feb. 24, Emerson Yu ‘24 climbs a roped route during the girls’ varsity competition. Participants had three hours to complete a total of five routes: two roped, two bouldering and one of their choice. “I started climbing about a year and a half ago,” Yu said. “I didn’t start competing until my senior year, which I kind of regret because I love it so much. The rock climbing community is great.”

In a kickline, the varsity poms team competes in the Game-Day finals Feb. 3. The team competed in two other categories during Nationals: Small Pom, where they placed sixth, along with Small Jazz, where the team didn’t place.

Lola Claggett ‘25 tries to slip herself away from Kyle Walsh ‘25 during the final dress rehearsal in the auditorium April 2. Kim, Claggett’s character, initially found herself head-over-heels for Conrad, played by Walsh. However, after spending time with Conrad alone, Kim quickly realizes her mistake and tries to find a way to return to her home. “A challenge I came across while playing Kim was being able to pinpoint when her opinion of Conrad changed,” Claggett said. “She has to love him at first and slowly start to see the gross person he is. I had a hard time making that arc not only noticeable to the audience but also make sense and be in line with the rest of the plot.”

Odds and Ends: Screaming Sirens or Soft Speech?
Varsity softball captain and shortstop Sydney Boulaphinh ‘24 swings to hit the ball during the fifth inning Oct. 3. Boulaphinh committed to play Division 1 collegiate softball for Stanford University during her junior year. This season was one of the worst seasons in Rock Canyon history, Boulaphinh said. I think this team had a lot of expectations and relied on many people to carry, and that never happened. I believe most of the games we lost, we could’ve won. It’s the little things that matter--when it came down to who got to 21 outs first, we weren’t the team.

After recognizing varsity seniors Ella Henry 24, Leah Cross 24 and Allison Stanton 24, parents and other teammates gathered to take a group photo Feb. 8. Senior Night took place on the last home boys basketball game of the season in the jungle. “I will miss their dedication and support the most. Whenever I needed help I could always rely on the seniors to give me the best solution possible and they were always so amazing to talk to about anything,” varsity poms dancer Maleah Koehn ‘25 said.

Varsity hockey players Steven Kannenberg 25, Hunter Berven 24 and Maxx Menzies 24 skate after the puck Jan. 27. The team was tied 2-2 against Chatfield, later setting the score three minutes into overtime with a final score of 3-2 W. I think we absolutely performed better than our record states, Kannenberg said. We competed very well even with our injuries and short benches.

With his arm around his opponent’s head, varsity wrestling captain Ryan Banks ‘24 competes against a Thomas Jefferson High School wrestler at a home dual meet Jan. 31. Banks wrestled in the 215 weight class and lost 9-8. Before the dual, the team hosted Senior Night, where math teacher and sports commentator Brian Lamb announced the wrestlers’ post-graduation plans and shared their favorite memories from their wrestling careers. The meet ended with a final score of 48-21 L. “A moment that has made wrestling worth it to me this season is when I wrestled at Battle of the Ranch,” Banks said. “Going into the tournament, I had just moved up a weight class, so I wasn’t too sure how it would turn out. However, I ended up pinning two out of [the] three guys [that] I wrestled, and it felt like all [of] my work was finally coming together.”

We broke down in the final minutes of the game. Although it was bad, I know the boys can bounce back,” varsity forward Steven Kannenberg ‘25 said.

Spanish teacher Derek DeNileon counts Sumanth Kaja ‘27 and Dakota Dugan ‘28 down for their final answers during the seventh-period Basura Ball Competition Jan. 23. The name ‘Basura Ball’ translates to ‘Trash Ball’ due to the fashion of the ball, which is created from scraps of old tape by DeNileon himself, and is played to review for upcoming tests. The game itself divides players into two teams, from which one person is selected to represent the team. The two rival teams’ representatives go face-to-face to answer a Spanish question. The representative with the quickest correct answer receives one point and a chance to make a shot in the trash can for even more, depending on how far they stand from the trash can. “Tensions are high, but that’s just the way the Basura Ball bounces, man,” DeNileon said.
