Earlier this week, news broke online of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)’s open investigation into Douglas County School District (DCSD).
According to Colorado Public Radio, the investigation deals with allegations of racial discrimination, harassment and bullying against students, along with their use of seclusion and restraint on students with disabilities.
“We definitely take [discrimination] allegations really seriously because we have to,” Assistant Principal Kelsi Kraft said. “We want everyone to be safe, right? That’s our number one goal.”
In response to news of the investigation, DCSD issued a statement to Denver7 News.
“Our focus is on taking care of each and every one of our students in the Douglas County School District (DCSD). Any student or parent who has a concern should report it immediately to their school leader or DCSD’s Compliance Office. We take every concern very seriously as we are dedicated to ensuring that all of our students and staff experience a welcoming and caring environment in our schools.”
More information about the investigation is yet to be released. The DOJ is available to reach through email at [email protected] or by calling 888-394-6317 to report discriminatory behavior. The school district is also reachable by calling 303-387-0100 with any questions, comments or concerns about the situation.
