Students have begun to respond to the incident and several have spoken to Rockmedia about their thoughts on the situation.

“The actions taken at Evergreen today are devastating, and my first thoughts are directed towards support for the families and students involved. The nature of the shooting illustrates a greater issue within the United States regarding gun control and prioritizing the safety of our youth,” Cierra Lorenz ’26 said. “It raises the question of why legislators are so quick to respond on their social media regarding their feelings rather than taking action to develop bipartisan legislation to address the true issues at hand. “

Students are also beginning to share posts and news headlines through Instagram stories, sharing their dissent towards the situation.

Reva Mehrotra ’26 reposted an image from anti-gun violence activism groups Moms Demand and Students Demand. The post calls on lawmakers to take action on gun violence in the wake of the shooting today at Evergreen.

“More young lives forever devastated by our nation’s preventable gun violence crisis. When will our lawmakers stand up to the gun lobby so our children don’t have to stand up to gunmen?”

“This is truly a horrific situation that shouldn’t be normalized or be a trend in our country. Along with the severity of these events, the aftermath and impact it has on students and families physically, mentally and socially can leave an emotional scar for years to come,” Mehrotra said. “We deserve to live in a world where our fears are [not] being in a situation this gruesome as we live our day-to-day lives and go to school for an education. I feel the best way to find humanity is through unity and hopefully, despite there being a divide in our nation from stemmed aspects like politics [or] religion, I feel we can all agree that innocent lives being taken is wrong and we need to come together and find a solution no matter what your political stance or personal beliefs are.”

DCSD superintendent Erin Kane issues statement in solidarity with Evergreen

Superintendent Erin Kane issued a statement through email to Douglas County parents, families and community members at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“Earlier today, a shooting took place at Evergreen High School in Jefferson County. Our hearts go out to the impacted staff and students and the entire Evergreen High School community,” the statement reads. “As a mom and a leader of schools, I know how events like today can shake us all and raise questions about how we are working to keep our students safe. I want to take this moment to reassure you that nothing is more important than the safety of our students and staff.”

Kane also mentioned the current district-level safety protocols in place, assuring families that the district “continuously evaluate[s] (and re-evaluate[s]) our safety protocols.”

“We are incredibly thankful for the strong partnerships that we have with our local law enforcement partners which enable us to have School Resource Officers and Campus Security Specialists at our schools. Our security staff and law enforcement are constantly working together to monitor events, assess potential threats and take necessary measures to ensure student and staff safety. In addition, DCSD has a Safety Committee made up of law enforcement representatives from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Castle Rock Police Department, Parker Police Department, and Lone Tree Police Department as well as mental health and security experts from across our county. That committee meets regularly to discuss our safety protocols.”

The statement concluded a resource provided by Kane for families and educators to guide discussions about violence, which can be found here.
