The sound of music and celebrations blare through the air as a goal is made by the varsity combined ice hockey team.
The team consists of three Douglas County High Schools: Rock Canyon High School, Douglas County High School and Castle View High School, the team sponsor.
The team played against Resurrection Christian at South Suburban Sports Complex for their second game of the current Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) season Dec. 9.
Seven minutes into the first period, senior forward Steven Kannenberg scored the team’s first goal of the game.
Going into the next period, the team scored three more goals, the first by senior forward Grant Siroky, the second by senior forward Maxxwell Menzies and lastly senior captain defenseman Hunter Berven. The team’s last goal was scored by sophomore forward Cody Marchand, resulting in a score of 5-1 W.
This was the team’s first win of the regular season after a loss to Heritage High School 5-0 Dec. 2.
The team played against Monarch at Blue Sports Stable Friday, Dec. 15 at 8:15 p.m., winning 4-3 after an overtime goal scored by Menzies. On Dec. 16, the team played against the Chatfield Chargers at 6:15 p.m. at Edge Ice Arena, ending the game with a score of 4-1 W.
On Dec. 20, at 6:15 p.m., the Sabercats take on the Chaparral Wolverines at Family Sports Center, and on Dec. 22 they play at 6:00 p.m. against Valor Christian High School at South Suburban Sports Complex.
