Cheers roar through the crowd as seniors and family walk onto the court. Emotions run high as flowers are passed to each player and a sense of gratitude fills the air.
The girls basketball team Senior Night took place Feb. 16 playing against Chaparral High School (CHS) in the jungle. The Jags won 60-37 W.
“We kind of went into the game thinking it was going to be a closer game and I think it honestly helped us. We studied them a lot and really needed to win this game because it would have set us up well for playoffs,” varsity point guard and shooting guard Brooke Harding ‘25 said. “It felt really good to get the seniors a win on their Senior Night.”
This win pushed the Jags from seed 13 to 12 entering the playoff season and earned the team their first home-hosted playoff game in 10 years.
“It was really good [to beat Chaparral] because going into that game, we [knew] that we beat them on their Senior Night last year so we just wanted to keep it up,” varsity forward Emily Feiman ‘24 said.
This season, four seniors were honored that night: guard Sarah Davis and forwards Sienna Pillsbury, Kate Fehr and Emily Feiman.
The four girls walked out with family members by their side, accompanied with cheers from all around the gym. They each had a personalized jersey board and bouquet in hand to celebrate the evening.
As a way to honor their support, each senior nominated a staff member of their choice who had the biggest impact on their life. Athletic trainer Taylor Quenzer and science teachers Susanne Petri, Jenny Wills and Payton Holloway were invited to receive the honor before the game began.
Math teacher Brian Lamb announces each basketball game for both the girls and boys team. On Senior Night, Lamb received a script from the coaches mentioning a favorite team memory, future plans and a fun fact about each of the seniors.
“It was really cute but sad and overwhelming [to get acknowledged],” varsity forward Kate Fehr ‘24 said. “I will definitely miss the [team] community and all of the girls are such close friends of mine. It’s weird to think that I’m not going to see any of them every day for three months next year.”
This week, the Jags began their playoff season, beating the Erie Tigers 49-30 at home Feb. 20, achieving a 19-5 season record, according to MaxPreps. Today, Feb. 23, the Jags play away at 6 p.m. in their second playoff game of the Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Girls Basketball State Tournament against the Pine Creek Eagles at Pine Creek.
