On Feb. 24, Emerson Yu ‘24 climbs a roped route during the girls’ varsity competition. Participants had three hours to complete a total of five routes: two roped, two bouldering and one of their choice. “I started climbing about a year and a half ago,” Yu said. “I didn’t start competing until my senior year, which I kind of regret because I love it so much. The rock climbing community is great.”

Reaching New Heights

Rock climbing competes and places at State.

You reach for the next rock, a dark green peg that is rough beneath your grip.

You maneuver around the rope in front of you, reaching into the bag of chalk at your hip as your hands start to sweat. Almost there, almost…

Shouts of achievement from competitors and bystanders alike erupt before your hands reach the end of the route. You made it– giddy and exhausted–to the end of a rock climbing route.

On Feb. 24, the varsity and JV rock climbing team competed at the American Scholastic Climbing League (ASCL) state competition at Gripstone Climbing & Fitness in Colorado Springs. Over the course of three hours, a total of 10 climbers from the varsity girls, varsity boys and JV teams represented the school. While the varsity girls team did not place, both varsity boys and JV won second in the state.
