With spring break fast approaching, most would think of hot, sunny weather.
But, in Colorado, teachers and students alike have set the school abuzz with talk of the snow day on Thursday, March 14.
Officially announced on the afternoon of March 13 by Douglas County School District, a snow day canceled school for Thursday, March 14.
But, how big is this storm? Will school be canceled on Friday as well?
Here’s what you need to know.
The Forecast:
A winter storm watch was expanded to include Denver, Boulder and Palmer Divide east to Limon, forecasters at the National Weather Service in Boulder announced on the morning of March 12. Later that morning, they confirmed the high probability of a snowstorm bringing an estimated one foot of snow in the Front Range and Palmer Divide.
According to the Denver Post, the storm will blow in on Wednesday afternoon, and bring up to three feet of snow. The Palmer Divide and metro areas have a winter storm watch from 6 p.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. on Friday.
“I think, depending on the weather, we’re going to have a snow day,” Alexa Massey ‘25 said. “ I want [a day off]. If it snows, we’re having a snow day. If it doesn’t, we’re not going to.”
Weather apps, like Weather on the App Store, already gave out winter storm warnings starting at 9 p.m. on March 13. AccuWeather: Weather Alerts on the App Store created a chart on how much snow will land per hour, starting Wednesday at 6 p.m. and ending on Friday at 10 a.m. It also shows how much snow there will be in total, estimating around 21 inches of snow.
“If snow totals truly reach forecasts of one to two FEET, it is unlikely that residential roads, parking lots, bus terminals, etc. would be cleared in time for Friday. We will continue to monitor the weather and forecasts and will update you should DCSD remain closed on Friday,” Douglas County School District announced along with the snow day.
