Rock Canyon’s Varsity Volleyball team fought the Arapahoe Warriors on Thursday night, August 25, in their home gym in hopes of leaving their first game of the season with a win.

A sea of fans sporting white clothing, in support of the ‘White Out’ theme, and upbeat music set the mood for the exciting and riveting match. The team’s energy during the time in which they warmed up was evident, as was the rivaling crowd’s competition as the clock ticked closer to 6:00.

The intense level of competition was not unfamiliar to any players, as nearly every member of this year’s Girls Varsity team is a returning player from last season’s team, all except sophomore Laryssa Myers.

“I’m a little nervous but pretty hyped,” Myers said, referring to the game, before they took the floor.

The rest of the team experienced a third place tie in the state competition last year, and they’re thirsty for another title. Led by head coach Angela Nylund, the team was concentrated on playing to the best of their ability.

“We’re focused on taking the game point by point and making sure that we go for everything and just giving the fans one great game,” Myers said. Their strategy worked in their favor, beating the other team all three sets for an entire match win.

The 25-21 third set ended with a kill from Myers, and led to an even greater determination from the team to achieve the goal that no previous Rock Canyon Volleyball team has been able to accomplish: winning first at State.
