16 seniors all lined up in a row, with name cards displayed with their future college name and logo.

Parents watch the ceremony with phones out, while the athletes sit and sign their papers, committing to  future in collegiate athletics.

National Signing Day took place across the country Feb. 7. At 7 a.m. in the cafeteria, the school held its second signing day of the year. Early Signing Day took place Nov. 8.

“It was awesome to be signing,” varsity lacrosse commit Cale Maguire ‘24 said. “I’ve watched almost every single signing at Rock Canyon while I’ve been here, and for it to finally be my turn was amazing.”

The day started with an opening speech by Athletic Director Tom Brieske, followed by the coaches of each athlete speaking about their players’ years in high school. Finally, after all the remarks by coaches, Principal Andrew Abner gave the go for the students to begin signing their papers.

The papers students were given were simple papers that read “Congratulations,” used as a stand-in for the students’ National Letters of Intent (NLI). Students signed their NLI on their personal time either before or after the ceremony.

“I signed my NLI about a week before the signing day at school,” varsity soccer commit Macey Williams ‘24 said. “Signing was one of the best feelings because I have worked hard my whole life with the goal of playing soccer in college and this is the point where I got to put on paper where I would be going.”

After the signing, each student received a wooden keychain congratulating them on their accomplishments. Donuts and coffee were also distributed on tables for students and guests to eat.

The next signing ceremony will take place May 1, as the last signing day for 2024 commits.
