Winterguard made school history April 6 after a 12-hour day competition at the Denver University (DU) Magness Arena.
“While waiting for the scores, I felt very nervous, especially when they started to announce scores in the 70s, and we were only halfway through all the teams,” Ava Delp ‘27 said.
Out of 24 teams in their class, or group, sharing a similar skill level, the winterguard team won first place at their state championships for the first time ever. The team had a final 83.830, with a 4.480 point increase from their competition a week prior, where they got 79.350 points. This year, they had placed first at every competition they performed at.
“When we won, everyone was crying, screaming or a mixture [of the two],” Delp said.
Due to them winning their state championship, they will be re-evaluated to see if they will move up a class. The Rocky Mountain Color Guard Assosiation (RMCGA) website explains the differences between the classes. Their shows would need more dance-type moments, such as the lift they performed, and it would need to be four to five minutes.
“I loved all of the show, but the [trio] pods always looked really cool,” Delp said.
They performed to the song “The Pines,” by Roses and Revolutions. It featured flags, sabres, rifles and lanterns and lasted three minutes and 17 seconds. The highest toss thrown was a double.
While their season is done, they will be performing an adjusted version of their show at the Concert in the Park, April 30, for the final time.
