The Week in Photos: April 27-May 3

An overview of what students are keeping up with as the year begins to end
At Mile High Station April 27, Principal Andrew Abner announces Chloe Bishop ‘24 as Prom Queen. Bishop won Prom Queen alongside senior Andrew Kim ‘24 as Prom King. The two were nominated for these positions during their Seminar classes several weeks prior to the dance. The prize for winning Prom Queen included flowers, a crown and a sash. “I’ve put my sash on a top shelf in my room and my flowers are in a vase with water in it. The roses were kind of a reddish color and they’re my mom’s favorite flower,” Bishop said. Media by Claire Bauer
Varsity girls soccer midfielder Leah Sheahan ‘24 hugs a friend during the Senior Night celebrations before the home game against Mountain Vista High School (MVHS) at Echo Park Stadium April 29. During Senior Night, seniors were given flowers and the opportunity to walk out and take pictures with their family as their future plans and favorite memories were announced over the speakers. The Jags tied 0-0, losing the Continental League Championship. “We were obviously the stronger team but just couldn’t find a way to score, but otherwise our connection and our intensity was really high so I’m proud of that. We just have to find the net,” defense midfielder Clara Geuzaine ‘24 said. “[Losing League] wasn’t the best. It’s better than last year and like, I know our team and we are doing really good. I don’t want to jinx it but like hopefully [we’ll do] good [in playoffs].” (media by Claire Bauer)
Morgan Mellor ‘24 tapes the mural sketch to the wall outside the Ceramics room 7100 April 30. Since 2016, a member of the senior class has painted a mural for the year to let future students know about a defining moment from that school year, with this year focusing on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI). “AI really changed the way we do our school work and impacted our ethical views so I felt it was a perfect choice for the mural,” Mellor said. At the Rock Media banquet April 30, Black & Gold Yearbook and The Rock Online adviser Kristi Rathbun and Rock Canyon Television (RCTV) adviser Jim McClurg welcome 12 students into Quill & Scroll International Honor Society in the Commons. The Rock Online, the Black & Gold yearbook and broadcast students joined together at 6 p.m. to eat Chick-fil-A and celebrate the accomplishments of the year. Seniors that were initiated into Quill & Scroll were awarded a cord to receive on Senior Honors Night May 20 and wear at graduation May 24. To apply for Quill & Scroll, students had to be a sophomore or older, have a B grade average and be in the upper third of their class. After the initiation, students received a pin and certificate. “I was given the application by my teacher and I am in RCTV so I enjoy broadcasting, doing PSAs and promos,” Joel Bruciaga ‘24 said. “Right now, I’m trying to become a director one day, so just organizing projects, setting up interviews and making sure that I’m getting footage behind-the-scenes of what peoples’ lives and whatever I’m focusing on looks like will definitely help later.” Media by Claire Yeater
At the annual Research Symposium, Ria Ghosh ‘25 presents her Biotechnology research presentation in the upper hallway May 2. Students in AP Research and Biotechnology Research classes conducted their own research throughout the year and presented their findings at the Research Symposium. “My group and I analyzed the effects of Rhodiola rosea on Alzheimer’s Disease in Caenorhabditis elegans. We got to present our results to students, faculty and parents at the symposium,” Ghosh said. “I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who is looking into the research and lab-based fields.”
