Man Poms poses at the end of their routine in the gym during the Homecoming Assembly Sept. 19. Man Poms is an annual tradition in which boys from the senior class perform at both the Homecoming Assembly and the Homecoming football game. “I joined Man Poms because it sounded fun and a lot of my friends were doing it, so I went ahead and joined. Also performing in front of the whole school sounded amazing,” Man Poms dancer Nidhay Somanchi ‘25 said. “My favorite part of performing was hyping up the crowd at the football game and at the assembly because it shows our connections with each other and our crazy school spirit.”

The activities fair took place during access and allowed for student-made and chapter clubs to describe their goals and activities to potential new members. About 80 clubs participated in the activities fair. “I think it’s so important for high schoolers to join clubs because it gives them a community to rely on, and it gives high schoolers more structure,” Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) club member Anouck Doublet ‘25 said.

I also felt very exhausted cause I played for most of the game,” Duman said.

Jane Murphie ‘27 adds flavoring to her shaved ice at the Kona Ice truck by the rock in the lower parking lot April 25. Kona Ice was available to students from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with $1 from each purchase going towards renovations of schools in Ghana, Africa. Interact Club worked with the Rotaract Association in Ghana for the past three months to plan the project and is fundraising money to meet their $1,000 goal through direct donations and partnerships with Kona Ice April 25, Twisted Sugar April 26 and Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck next Tuesday, April 30. “I saw the posters about Ghana and I love Kona Ice because it tastes good so I chose the blue raspberry flavor,” Murphie said.

The Rock Online Newspaper staff and Black & Gold Yearbook staff take a celebratory photo to commemorate the publications’ national awards received at the National Student Press Association (NSPA) Journalism Education Association (JEA) Kansas City Convention April 6. The Rock Online and Black & Gold received eight national awards in total, including five from the NSPA Sports Photo award category. The Rock Online website won fourth place in overall Best of Show. “I was very shocked when I won an award at the NSPA convention, because I like to compare myself to a lot of the other photographers, and it was just really cool to hear my name called in front of all those people,” Yeater said. “Not only did I learn a lot during the many workshops I went to, I also got the opportunity to bond with some people that I hadn’t known very well prior to the convention, so I think my biggest takeaway is how close of a family everyone in media is.”

Kindness Week, which began on April 1 and continues through April 5, is run by student peer counselors. The week encompasses spreading kindness to one another through promoting spirit days, selling kindness grams, organizing a campus clean up, passing out journals and more. “Our goal with Kindness Week is to create a better environment in our school and just spread kindness to our community,” Mejia said. “We just want to make sure that everyone feels appreciated and just find a way to spread kindness around here.”

Ali Gustafson ‘24 accepts the “Good Citizen’s Award” in association with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) at the Castle Pines Library Feb. 17. According to DAR Good Citizen, the award “recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools, and community.” Gustafson was nominated by her counselor and chose to write a two hour timed essay on Nov. 28. “I am extremely grateful to have received this award as it had heavy emphasis [on] dedication and responsibility as well as patriotism. Without my time in yearbook, I would have never been able to speak to how amazing it is to be able to exercise the First Amendment. It also meant the world to have the Kristi Rathbun, Rob Rathbun, Ms. Thomsen, Ms. Dermody and my parents in attendance,” Gustafson said.

As the referee blows the whistle to start the match, varsity wrestling captain Noah Jadd ‘26 faces off against Boulder High School wrestler Abe Pomeroy ‘25 in his first match on day one of State Feb. 15. Jadd wrestled in the 144 weight class and lost 20-8, sending him to the first round consolation matches that took place Feb. 16. In his consolation match, Jadd wrestled Chaparral High School wrestler Dominic Cordray ‘25 and lost 5-3, which eliminated him from the tournament. “I was not happy with the outcome I had, but I’m glad I made it to State. I think [in] my first match, I didn't come out with the fire I usually have but I tried my hardest my second match. I tried my best with everything so I'm not super disappointed,” Jadd said. “[The support] made me feel really great, it added a little bit of pressure but I also felt at home with everybody and having friends and family and stuff [at State]. [Next year], I want to do better. I want to be back here and I want to go farther. I want to get on that podium.”

With his arm around his opponent’s head, varsity wrestling captain Ryan Banks ‘24 competes against a Thomas Jefferson High School wrestler at a home dual meet Jan. 31. Banks wrestled in the 215 weight class and lost 9-8. Before the dual, the team hosted Senior Night, where math teacher and sports commentator Brian Lamb announced the wrestlers’ post-graduation plans and shared their favorite memories from their wrestling careers. The meet ended with a final score of 48-21 L. “A moment that has made wrestling worth it to me this season is when I wrestled at Battle of the Ranch,” Banks said. “Going into the tournament, I had just moved up a weight class, so I wasn’t too sure how it would turn out. However, I ended up pinning two out of [the] three guys [that] I wrestled, and it felt like all [of] my work was finally coming together.”

The name ‘Basura Ball’ translates to ‘Trash Ball’ due to the fashion of the ball, which is created from scraps of old tape by DeNileon himself, and is played to review for upcoming tests. The game itself divides players into two teams, from which one person is selected to represent the team. The two rival teams’ representatives go face-to-face to answer a Spanish question. The representative with the quickest correct answer receives one point and a chance to make a shot in the trash can for even more, depending on how far they stand from the trash can. “Tensions are high, but that’s just the way the Basura Ball bounces, man,” DeNileon said.

Dane Zitzlsperger ‘25 leans on the chassis of his go-kart to push it up his driveway Jan 8. According to FOX 31 Denver, Highlands Ranch received three and a half inches of snow. This allowed Zitzlsperger to spend his last day of winter break drifting his custom-built go-kart through fresh powder. “In the summers, I can’t really drift the kart since the tires can’t handle it, but in winter snow, it easily cranks donuts and long drifts,” Zitzlsperger said.

Saanvi Kirdak ‘26, Ihita Kataru ‘26 and Mai Intongkam ‘26 sit side by side under the 8000s pod’s stairway and read “A Raisin in the Sun” during Honors English II Nov. 30. “A Raisin in the Sun,” a play written by American writer and playwright Lorraine Hansberry, depicts the lives of an African American family during the 1950s residing in Chicago. Students grouped up with their tablemates and assigned themselves roles from a list of characters in the play. The class was then divided into two halves, one remaining inside the classroom to read and the other going outside into the halls. Along with participating in reading with their peers, students also analyzed the text and completed annotation assignments. “I like this activity because it allows me to spend time with my friends and I’m learning at the same time,” Kataru said.

He finished in second place within the individual category. “I feel a little bit gutted not being able to complete [climb 30], but with the progression of the season comes more learning opportunities, not just for myself, but the team, too,” Ozdemir said. “It definitely is one of the best feelings, throwing great attempts down at the hardest problems in the set.”

The class had five different dissections throughout the semester to learn about biodiversity and phyla. “I like teaching kids about animals and facts about animals they didn’t know before, but also the importance of biodiversity,” Dobos said. “I think more students should take [Zoology], especially if you love animals and dissections because you can learn more than just general [animal] knowledge.”

Around three to five students attend the club every other Monday after school. "The best part of Casino Club is probably just hanging out with people and playing card games like poker," Parker said. "Students should join the club because you don't really need to pay for it, it's not very intrusive and anybody can just sit down and start playing without the worry of losing money."

The class worked on various sheet music compositions and presented finger exercises. “It's nice just having a class that's kind of like a break from everything. I originally started taking it because I figured [that] practicing by myself wasn't that fun, but if I forced myself to practice, however many times a week, then I could get good at it,” Freivogel said.

Reagan Kerstiens ‘24 works with Ella Bendle ‘24 to brainstorm school spirit events at the inaugural Continental League Fall Super Summit at Chaparral High School Aug. 26. The summit ran from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and consisted of free breakfast, three 40-minute morning sessions, lunches from truck lunches and a final fourth session for each school to discuss what they learned that day. Over 55 Jaguars attended. “We went around listening to different speakers or student-led discussions. The first one talked about advertising and how schools have different strengths. Then, I went to a business panel with a few speakers, most of them in the construction industry, talking about the struggles of running your own business and the importance of networking. There was also a speaker, he was ex-military, telling us some of the important characteristics of leaders,” Kerstiens said. “I think [the summit] was a good opportunity, I’m glad I got to learn some new things.”

At this point in the election, Vice President Joe Biden needed 6 electoral votes to win the election, which shifted a focus to Nevada, a projected blue state with 6 electoral votes. “Democracy only works if people vote and inevitably whoever is elected is elected, for better or for worse,” Aspen Shih ’22 said. “I feel like this election has been so drastically polarized but hopefully this election will move the country forward during these times.”
