A Case For Hype

Over the last few years hyped streetwear has played a significant role in fashion– but is the hype worth the price? Brands like Adidas and Nike have a higher price on their shoes but implement the newest technology and the highest quality, not to mention they have a great aesthetic. Adidas’s technology is called boost, and it implements hundreds of soft pellets that have great comfortability and help you perform well. Adidas’s best example of this technology is the Ultraboost, retailing for $180-$220. Nike, however, uses air. Air is just what the name implies. They put air in the shoe midsole making a comfortable and lightweight shoe. Nike’s best example of this is the Vapormax, retailing for $190-$250. The majority of people believe that the quality of these shoes outweighs their price.

“I love my ultra boosts, it’s my favorite shoe,” Reagan Wangler ’22 said.

The majority of these shoes don’t go for retail– if you want to pick them up check sites like Stockx for a fair price. Some people enjoy getting shoes or clothing you can’t get through. Brands like Supreme, Off White, Bape and others sell their products at a high price and low quantity so they are extremely rare and expensive. This creates the “hype” culture that snowballs into the high demand we see in these brands. A prime example of this is the ever famous Supreme box logo tee. These simple shirts retail for a surprisingly low price of $54. Don’t let the low retail price confuse you; these shirts resell for $300-$6000. In this case most people wouldn’t think it’s worth the resell price.

“I love supreme but I would rather get Tyler The Creator converse,” Zane Ellwood ’22 said.

If the resell is more that 2x the retail price, the likelihood of the price matching the product is low. No matter what your style or price point is, hype can fit into your outfit. Although most hyped items are streetwear, there are some higher end brands that are included in today’s fashion trends. Recently, the high end brands have followed trends like the dad shoe and the side bag. Most people use these high end brands to balance their streetwear style or as a center piece of a normal outfit to take it to the next level.
