Two kingdoms at war – two minds going head-to-head in a battle for the board. The intensity of the game is threatening when walking through the library doors. The onslaught of game pieces makes spectators fear the competition because of the killer pressure.

Club activities include eating, drinking, and strategic planning during games. They play against each other to develop critical thinking skills to engage against like-minded opponents.

Determined to sustain the Chess Club through hybrid learning, the Co-president of Chess Club, Wendy Werner ‘22, holds in-person meetings.

“I’m really excited to have Chess Club meet again because of the incredible and fun environment it creates,” Werner said.  “It provides new members with an opportunity to make new friends while improving their skills in this fun, challenging game.”

The Chess Club follows the school’s safety protocols by remaining six feet apart as much as possible and only spends a maximum of 15 minutes at the same tables as someone else to minimize the risk of spreading the virus. Their hands, as well as the boards are sanitized frequently.

The club’s first meetings of 2021 were Tuesday, March 2 and Wednesday, March 3, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons. Meetings will be held in the Learning Commons once a twice a month on Tuesday and Wednesday.
