The Week in Photos: April 6-April 12

Events, evacuations and more from the week.
The Rock Online Newspaper staff and Black & Gold Yearbook staff take a celebratory photo to commemorate the publications’ national awards received at the National Student Press Association (NSPA) Journalism Education Association (JEA) Kansas City Convention April 6. The Rock Online and Black & Gold received eight national awards in total, including five from the NSPA Sports Photo award category. The Rock Online website won fourth place in overall Best of Show. “I was very shocked when I won an award at the NSPA convention, because I like to compare myself to a lot of the other photographers, and it was just really cool to hear my name called in front of all those people,” Yeater said. “Not only did I learn a lot during the many workshops I went to, I also got the opportunity to bond with some people that I hadn’t known very well prior to the convention, so I think my biggest takeaway is how close of a family everyone in media is.” (media by photo courtesy of Kristi Rathbun)
Through science teacher Jack Van Natta’s telescope, Allie Emery ‘27 observes the solar eclipse during third period April 8. The solar eclipse lasted between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with the maximum partial eclipse taking place around 12:40 p.m. About 65.9% of the sun was covered from the school’s angle. Students watched using pinhole viewers, film glasses, the telescope and more. “It’s just something that you don’t see often and when you get to see it it’s really cool. If you miss it, you got to wait, it takes a while. It’s pretty amazing, so if you wanna come out and see it, I think it’s a good thing to take a break from class,” School Resource Officer (SRO) Mark Adams said. (media by Dee Lee)
Caroline Watts ‘26 and Camille Olsen ‘26 stand outside after evacuating the building during an unplanned safety evacuation April 9. While in fifth period around 8:30 a.m., the fire alarm went off due to the steam from the kitchen dishwasher triggering the fire sensors. “It was actually a nice break from classes and we got to go outside,” Olsen said. Evan Tetreault ‘25 pulls the water hose out to put out the simulated fire at the staged Driving Under the Influence (DUI) accident scene in a parking lot April 9. According to CBS News, a total of 200 Jaguars took part in this simulation. All emergency service programs attended this field trip along with the forensics classes. Students were tasked to simulate a real world scenario of their future careers. Criminal Justice students took on the role of the police as Emergency Medical Technician students and the Fire Science students assessed the victims for injuries. Also, Douglas County police officers, South Metro firefighters and a crime scene investigator came to the scene to mentor and help students understand what they needed to do. “I learned that accidents can be very overwhelming. I did enjoy it a lot and it gave me a lot more experience that I could get in a classroom,” Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) student Madi Krom ‘24 said.
Tyler Chu ‘25 presents his speech at National Honor Society’s (NHS) elections in the auditorium April 12. He and 13 other nominees addressed their peers in one to two minute speeches to gain votes in order to join next school year’s NHS officer team. At around 3 p.m., the votes were tallied, and Chu learned that he had won the presidential campaign. “I feel truly inspired by the peers around me. My only hope is that I can do right by them,” Chu said. The new NHS officers for the upcoming school year will be: President Tyler Chu ‘25, Vice President Aditya Khanolkar ‘25, Secretary Kaylin Stancik ‘25, Historian Petra McGowan ‘25 and Public Relations Officer Kavini Giri ‘25. During fifth period AP Seminar, Chloe Stevens ‘25 and Anisma Panta ‘25 talk and eat pancakes to celebrate finishing their AP Seminar presentations April 12. The class worked on the presentations for the past couple of weeks, and in celebration of finishing them, students and AP Seminar teachers Mary Burnham and Matt Sassali ate pancakes, fruit, various drinks and pastries during the class. “It’s really fun and exciting to be able to have an off day after working so hard the past couple of weeks. The pancakes were so good and we had so many different drink options,” Steven said (media by Elly Brooks)
